Proverbs 22:6 – Train up a child in the way he should go, even when he is old, he will not depart from it.
Happy New Year! Being the eve of Three Kings Day, we discussed the story of the Three Kings as part of our lessons today – our first day back from winter break. We talked about the traditions relating to this holiday (also referred to as Epiphany), as well as the geographical region and biblical nativity setting for the historical aspects of the lesson. I also discussed the three gifts in detail (gold, frankincense and myrrh) and their symbolic meaning to give a deeper understanding of each gift presented. In addition, we studied the song We Three Kings using the book with same title by Gennady Spirin, which was wonderfully illustrated. Lastly, I decided to incorporate the art-based craft pictured below, which my son really enjoyed.
The craft was designed to focus on the element of lines in art. I cut out three rectangular pieces of colored construction paper and instructed my son to draw different faces for each of the Three Kings using only lines. We discussed different forms of lines, such as straight, curved, squiggly, vertical, horizontal, pointed, etc., to help build a foundation from which he could get ideas for his drawings. He then drew his faces on each piece of paper and we pasted them onto a sheet of black card stock. He used crayons to add color and crowns to the Three Kings, as well as to add stars for a starry night effect. He finished off the art craft by adding the names of the Three Kings at the bottom of each one.
Tonight we’ll go out in the early evening to look for the bright star that led the Three Kings to the Christ child and follow it symbolically as we celebrate this winter holiday that reminds me so much of my childhood traditions.
