Fairy Tales: A Comparison

I enjoy presenting varying views of a theme within my lessons. I came across The Three Bears Holiday Rhyme Book by Jane Yolen and decided to incorporate it into my lesson about Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The book presents a collection of poems for various holidays and special days based on Goldilocks’ Bear Family. It is a great way to introduce holidays commonly celebrated throughout the year. The days presented include Happy Birthday, Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Earth Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Independence Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Eve, among others. The colorful illustrations add to the charm of each poem/rhyme and offer insight into the Bear Family’s holiday traditions (which are very similar to our own). I thought it was a very creative way of blending themes into a unique and fun form.

Other books I incorporated into our Goldilocks and The Three Bears theme:

  • Original children’s tale version
  • Somebody and the Three Blairs by Marilyn Tolhurst (version where a bear goes into the Blair Family’s home)
  • Goldilocks and The Wolf by Hilary Robinson (Goldilocks and Little Red Riding Hood meet up in the forest and run into Wolf)
  • The Boy Who Thought He Was A Teddy Bear by Jeanne Willis
