Fairy Tales: A Comparison

A Creature Was Stirring: One Boy’s Night Before Christmas by Carter Goodrich offers a child’s point of view as it retells the classic poem The Night Before Christmas. The book is thoughtfully designed with a dual structured spread ~ the left side has the traditional, classic poem and the right side has the boy’s version of events. The text is brought to life through beautiful colored pencil illustrations. I really enjoyed this book’s creative take on a classic. It’s a wonderful addition to any holiday reading list! Targets ages 5-8.

Other Versions:

The Dinosaurs’ Night Before Christmas by Anne Muecke: This version takes place at a museum’s dinosaur exhibit on Christmas Eve featuring the boy who lives across the street. The story was inspired by the author’s time spent volunteering at the dinosaur halls of the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. Her amusing and heart-warming rhymed story makes this version a wonderful read. My son and I really enjoyed the story and its mural-like illustrations. The back of the book includes a collection of dinosaur-themed Christmas songs along with a CD of the songs and a read-along version of the story read by Al Rocker. I highly recommend this version as well. It targets ages 4-7.
