  • The Little House by Virginia Lee Burton (Caldecott Medal Award) ~ the story of how a country house becomes unhappy when a city develops all around her over time. Loved it!
  • Town Mouse, Country Mouse by Jan Brett ~ after trading houses, a town mouse and a country mouse realize they prefer their own idea of a home.
  • Everything Is Different At Nonna’s House by Caron Lee Cohen ~ a boy describes the differences between his house in the city and his grandparent’s farm in the country. Heart-warming story.
  • Moon Rabbit by Natalie Russell ~ tells the story of a city rabbit who befriends a country rabbit but soon gets homesick and craves the comfort and familiarity of the city life. Nice perspective.

Lesson Topics To Cover:

  • Describe country or rural living
  • Describe city or urban living
  • Ask the child to characterize where they live. Do they live in a rural or urban environment?
  • What are some advantages and disadvantages of both? You can use this teacher guide/prompt sheet to help with themes
  • Ask where they think people have more choices: in rural or urban areas? Why?
  • Ask which do they think would be a more expensive way of life? Why?
  • Do you think one is more beautiful than the other? If so, which one and why?
  • Do you think one is better than the other? If so, which one and why?
  • Which type of living do you prefer? Why?

Related Terminology: Country life is generally characterized as living in “a small town” whereas city life is generally characterized as living in “the big city.” Explain some reasons of why that is.

Story It: Provide a picture of a city scene and a country scene. Have the child pick one and write a brief story about it using this form.

Categorization:

  1. Going through books or magazines, have the child pick out photos of country or city related scenes.
  2. Cut out pictures of country scenes and city scenes and have the child separate into appropriate label/pile.
  3. Using the “small town” and “big city” concepts, have the child say or write words they associate with each type.
