Proverbs 22:6 – Train up a child in the way he should go, even when he is old, he will not depart from it.
We recently read School by Emily Arnold McCully and really enjoyed it. This Caldecott Medal winner is a sweet story about a little mouse who finds out what school is like one day. Bitty, the youngest of the mice family, is too young to attend school like her brothers and sisters and generally stays home with Mama Mouse but on a beautiful autumn day, she decides to walk down to the school to see what it is like. She soon finds herself immersed in the midst of an exciting educational experience. The neat thing about this story is that my son got to see that he does the same things at home that the mice do at their school so it offers an opportunity for home schooled children to see themselves learning much the same way as traditionally schooled children. The illustrations perfectly depict the colors and beauty of autumn while the simple text adds just enough story without getting in the way of the watercolor artwork. This book is perfect for this time of year, as it blends the school and autumn themes nicely. Targets ages 3-5.
