Writing Skills

A workbook I’m currently using for writing development is Mead’s Idea Builders: First Steps to Creative Writing for K-2 Grades. The exercises are designed to develop fine motor skills and promote early writing with simple one-page activities. The workbook begins with a letter review focused on letter formation. It then progresses to word association by helping the child form pictures in the their mind using a specific theme to prompt ideas/words, which are then used to create a sentence. The exercises advance to formal sentence writing focused on proper structure and punctuation. The workbook offers a list of sight words that can be used to assist the child during activities, as well as tips for proper posture and pencil grasp. Each sheet has two hand print guides to help the child with paper stabilization. It’s been an effective teaching tool for us. Here are two examples:
